Privacy Concerns Rise with New Facial Recognition App

Smart glasses are evolving, and with them, privacy concerns are growing. Recently, a project caught attention for its mix of advanced tech and privacy issues. It showed how AI and smart glasses can gather information about people.

Marco Priani discussed this in his podcast. He mentioned how Google Glass had a design problem. People felt awkward wearing them. Meta improved this by teaming up with Ray-Ban. They made the glasses look normal. But Priani joked that even smart people don't wear smart glasses.

Despite this, Priani tried a pair of these glasses. He found them amazing, especially for collecting data about strangers. By just looking at someone's face, he can know their name, where they work, and more personal details. This information is gathered using an app called I Ex-Ray.

The app uses facial recognition software. It streams video from the glasses straight to Instagram. The AI then detects faces and searches the internet for more images of that person. It combines data from online sources, like articles and voter databases, to provide a lot of personal details. The process is fast and happens on the fly.

Priani highlighted the privacy concerns this technology raises. The app is not for public use. It's made to show the problems this technology can create. The team behind it did not share the exact technologies used. They wanted to prevent people from copying their work.

The project used a pipeline of five technologies to build this system. But the creators kept these details private. Priani joked that if they shared more, he would make a tutorial on building it.

The issues raised by this project are important. Technology continues to advance, making it easier to gather and analyze personal data. As these tools become more common, the need to protect privacy becomes more crucial. Developers and users must think about how this tech affects people's lives.

The growth of AI in smart glasses shows both innovation and risks. It highlights the balance needed between tech progress and privacy. More discussions and actions are necessary to ensure that technology helps and does not harm people's privacy.
